  • Alan H Gruber

    MD

    Alan H. Gruber is a board certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Gruber was raised in Brighton and graduated from Northwestern University. He returned to his hometown to attend the University of Rochester School of Medicine before moving on to San Francisco, where he completed his internship at Mt. Zion Hospital and then to New York, where he did his residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He then went to Boston to undertake a fellowship in oculoplastics at the Boston Eye Research Institute. Dr. Gruber made a second homecoming in 1986 and joined his father, Dr. Ellis Gruber, along with Dr. Max Presberg, and Dr. Howard I. Schenker at ROG. He was appointed to the University of Rochester clinical faculty and named clinical assistant professor. Over the course of his tenure at the U of R Medical Center, he has helped train medical students in fundamentals of ophthalmology and eye residents in ophthalmic plastic surgery. With extensive experience in all areas of ophthalmology, Dr. Gruber maintains a busy and medical and surgical practice, treating patients of all ages. A specialist in cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery, tearing problems, and orbit surgery, he is also an accomplished cataract surgeon who utilizes the latest technologies and lens implants. Dr. Gruber is highly experienced in glaucoma management, participating in many clinical drug research studies. He has served as the chief of the ophthalmology service at the Westfall Surgery Center.

  • Paul J Hartman

    MD

    Paul J. Hartman, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist. Dr. Hartman was raised in Mineola, NY and graduated from Vassar College before earning his MD at the Boston University School of Medicine. He stayed in Boston to undertake his internship at Tufts University Medical Center before heading to Nashville, TN to complete his residency at Vanderbilt University. While at Vanderbilt, Dr. Hartman served as the resident director of the ophthalmology wet lab and completed specialized research in the management of traumatic hyphema. In 1997, he joined Dr. Howard I. Schenker and Dr. Alan H. Gruber at ROG. He was also accepted onto the University of Rochester clinical faculty and was appointed clinical assistant professor. With extensive experience in all areas of ophthalmology, Dr. Hartman maintains a busy medical and surgical practice, treating patients of all ages. In addition to patient care, he is an active participant in clinical research and maintains affiliations with a number of professional organizations.

  • Peter J. Micca

    OD

    Peter J. Micca is a board licensed optometrist who specializes in corneal and contact management. Dr. Micca studied biology at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, NY before moving on to the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago where he earned his OD. Along the way he gained valuable experience examining exceptional children at Little City in Palantine, IL, a clinic affiliated with the Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Micca has decades of professional experience under his belt, working in a variety of settings, first in Milwaukee and then in the Rochester area. He joined ROG in 2008, where he applies his primary eye care skills to treating patients of all ages. He stays up to date in the field by pursuing numerous courses in continuing education.

  • Gerard Cairns

    OD, PhD

    Gerard Cairns is a board licensed optometrist. Dr. Cairns was born in Glasgow, Scotland and grew up not too far away in Montrose on the east coast. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Optometry from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1995 and practiced as an Optometrist in Dundee and Aberdeen for three years before emigrating to New Zealand. In New Zealand, Dr Cairns quickly became the Principal Optometrist of the Eye Clinic at Auckland Hospital with a dual role as Fellow in Ophthalmology at the University of Auckland. He specialized in advanced contact lens fitting and concurrently completed a PhD in Ophthalmology relating to corneal topography and visual optics in 2005. Later that year, Dr Cairns accepted the role of Manager of Global Medical Affairs for Bausch and Lomb and relocated to Rochester, New York, where he worked in research and development of contact lenses, and global product surveillance. In 2012, Dr Cairns founded a consulting company which has provided support to the eye care industry regarding medical devices ranging from surgical equipment and intraocular lenses for cataract surgery, to glaucoma treatments and specialty contact lenses. Dr Cairns married a Rochester native and their decision to stay in Rochester prompted him to seek a license to practice optometry here. In May 2016, Dr Cairns graduated top of the class in the Advanced Standing International Program at the New England College of Optometry and is now board certified to practice optometry in New York State. Dr Cairns is a keen, self-taught classical guitarist and avid cyclist. He and his wife enjoy arts and entertainment in and around Rochester, as well as taking regular trips to Scotland.
